FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After a successful open to the season at the UConn Invitational, the Sacred University women's volleyball team hits the road again this weekend for the Seton Hall Classic in South Orange, N.J.

LAST TIME OUT
SHU posted a 2-1 record at the UConn Invitational. The Pios started the event with a convincing sweep of Youngstown State before avenging last season's Northeast Conference (NEC) semifinal loss to LIU with a thrilling five-set win on the event's second day. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the hosting Huskies rained on SHU's parade in the tournament's finale.

In Saturday's win over LIU, standout out sophomore
Gaby Zovko tallied the second triple-double of her career, finishing with 38 assists, a career-high 14 kills and 14 digs. She is one of just six Division I players to record a triple-double this season. In recognition of her outstanding play this weekend, the Bedford, Mass., native was the first recipient of the Pioneers of the Week award.
Zovko finished the weekend top three on the team in kills, assists and digs. The defending NEC Setter and Rookie of the Year racked up 38 assists (7.55/set), 28 digs (2.55/set) and 24 kills (2.18/set).
DELIGHTFUL DEBUT
First Year libero
Miliani Villarreal immediately impacted the Pioneers in her first three collegiate matches, being named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Libero and Rookie of the Week after her showing at the UConn Invitational. The Murrieta, Calif., native led the Pioneers in digs in all three matches at the UConn Invitational. She finished the weekend tournament with 49 digs (4.45/set), 18 assists, five aces and one double-double.
Villarreal began the event with a match-high 15 digs in a sweep of Youngstown State. She followed that performance with a 21-dig, 11-assist double-double in a thrilling five-set win over LIU. Villarreal capped her week with 13 digs and four assists against the Huskies.
LOOKING ACROSS THE NET
Seton Hall
- The Pirates enter Friday's opener with a 0-3 record after a rough showing at the Florida Atlantic Invitational.
- Seton Hall was swept by Ball State, Florida Atlantic and Bryant over the two-day tournament.
- Sophomore outside hitter Senna Roberts-Navarro led the way for the Pirates with 16 kills (2.0/set), with a season-best eight coming against Florida Atlantic.
- Defensively, fellow sophomore Rylee Nelson paced the team with 36 digs (4.0/set).
- Seton Hall employed two setters at the event, as freshman Gwen Adler and senior Maddie Klungel both saw significant playing time with 34 and 29 assists, respectively.
Kent State
- The Golden Flashes will also be eying their first win of the season this weekend, as they opened the season with three losses at the Michigan Nike Classic.
- Kent State opened the event with a three-set defeat to Delaware before dropping back-to-back matches to the hosting Wolverines.
- Junior outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire led the Golden Flashes' attack in Ann Arbor, with 17 kills (1.89/set).
- Junior defensive specialist Greta Bolognini racked up a team-leading 31 digs (3.1/set), reaching double-figures in both matches against Michigan.
NJIT
- The Highlanders are 1-4 through their first five games of the season, tallying a win over NEC foe Le Moyne at the Salt City Classic.
- NJIT's setbacks include five-set defeats to the MAAC's Saint Peter's and Lafayette.
- Middle blocker Ines Varela started her senior season on fire, as she has tallied 27 blocks on the season, which leads all of Division I.
- The Lisbon, Portugal, native tallied 12 total blocks against Lafayette, which is the second-highest total in a five-set DI match this year.
- On the other side of the ball, sophomore Sara Siefert and freshman Ema Torres lead the team in kills with 53 and 46, respectively.
