Conner Named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week

Mekhi Conner brings in another honor after his performances last week
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (USBWA)-- Sacred Heart University men's basketball first-year point guard Mekhi Conner has been named one of five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week. This is the first time SHU has received the honor since Quincy McKnight was selected on January 17, 2017.
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player and Rookie of the Week, also named the Division I Men's Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
Conner averaged 12.5 assists and scored 14.0 points per game, leading SHU to a pair of victories on the road last week. He connected on 10-of-16 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, in the two games.
In the Pioneers' 93-84 victory over Canisius on Thursday, the first-year dished out 16 assists, tied for the second-most in a Division I game this season. He also added 10 points to tally his first career double-double.
On Saturday, in the Pios 86-77 victory over Niagara, Conner scored a career-high 18 points, going 6-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. He added nine assists, just one shy of a second consecutive assist/point double-double.
He leads the Pioneers this season with 116 total assists and 5.8 assists per game, tied for No. 1 in the MAAC. Meanwhile, his assist total is tied for 28th in the nation, and his assists average is tied for 25th.
