Men’s Volleyball Falls to Golden Eagles in EIVA Opener

Popp led SHU with 13 kills
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team fell to the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday night, 3-0, in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association conference opener.
Records:
SHU: 3-2 (EIVA 0-1)
University of Charleston (WV): 4-6 (EIVA 1-0)
Top Performers:
Jaron Popp: 13 kills (.310), 3 block assists, 1 solo block, 1 ace
Aleksa Mandic: 12 kills (.333), 6 digs
Alec Niemczyk: 6 block assists
How It Happened:
The Golden Eagles took an early 11-2 lead in the first set. SHU fought back to come within four but was unable to cut the deficit and ultimately fell 25-18.
The second set saw more even play from both teams. Charleston was able to take a five-point lead and maintain it until SHU rallied at the end to close the gap. The Pioneers built a wall to slow down the Golden Eagles as SHU secured five straight blocks to come within two. Charleston was able to take the second in 25-21.
The third set was closely but the Pios were unable to finish falling 26-24.

The teams are set to face again tomorrow, February 9, at noon in the Pitt Center.
