FAIRFIELD, Conn.—For the second consecutive season, Sacred Heart women's rugby senior Alyssa Cunningham has been nominated for the MA Sorensen Award.
The MA Sorensen Award is named after MaryAnn (MA) Sorensen, who won a Rugby World Cup in 1991 with the USA and played in two more finals. She was a groundbreaking player, coach, and doctor and remains a prime example of how high-level rugby players achieve on and off the field. MA Sorensen has been present at every Washington Athletic Club awards dinner to present the trophy that bears her name.
The nominees will be open to fan and team votes to help the Selection Panel create a list of finalists. The selection committee will decide the award winner from the finalists.
Cunningham, a three-time All-NIRA first-team selection, led the Pioneers with nine tries this season. She had 18 conversions and nine penalty goals for a total of 108 points. The senior captain also had 26 tackles, 185 passes, 53 carries, and 567 meters made. Cunningham has collected All-NIRA honors all four years of her career and has been a nominee for the MA Sorensen Award twice.
"I am truly humbled and honored to receive this nomination, and I'm incredibly grateful to my coaches, teammates, and supporters who have been with me every step of the way," said Cunningham. "This recognition means so much, and I appreciate everyone who has played a part in my journey."
