Men's Basketball Travels to Iona for Regular Season Finale

SHU will fight for playoff seeding on the road at Iona

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will conclude its regular season on the road at Iona on Saturday, March 8 at 4:00 pm. Having already clinched a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) postseason tournament, the Pios and Gaels are fighting for seeding as the regular season ends.

Opening Tip:

  • Sacred Heart and Iona will wrap up the regular season with their second meeting this year. Fighting for playoff seeding, Iona is in a three-way tie for fourth place, and the Pios are currently seventh.
  • The Pioneers are coming off a road loss at Manhattan, 90-74 on Thursday evening. Amiri Stewart led three players in double figures. Iona is coming off a 2-0 weekend in Western New York last weekend. 
  • Stewart had 20 as Bryce Johnson (18) scored in double figures for the third straight game, and Tanner Thomas added 12 in the loss. 
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (14.7), Anquan Hill (12.8), and Stewart (12.2). 
  • Thomas is the team leader in rebounds with 6.4, followed by Johnson (5.9) and Hill (5.3).
  • Mekhi Conner is 12th in the nation with 194 assists and 11th in assists per game, with 6.6 this season.
  • Sacred Heart's 9.5 three-pointers per game are 40th in the country, 44th in 3PT attempts at 27.2, and 37th in assists per game at 16.2. 
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • This is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers. 

Last Time Out:

  • Sacred Heart is coming off a 90-74 road loss to Manhattan on Thursday evening.
  • Amiri Stewart scored 20 points, Bryce Johnson scored 18, and Tanner Thomas scored 12, leading the Pioneers. Thomas was the team leader in rebounds with eight.
  • Both teams almost had matching numbers through the opening half. Shooting 50% from the field and making five triples, the Pioneers trailed by just one at the halftime break. Stewart (14) and Johnson (11) hit double figures in the first half.
  • Manhattan led by as many as 13 points through the opening six minutes of the second half.
  • SHU pulled within seven, but ultimately the Jaspers pulled ahead by 16 for the 90-74 final.

About Iona: 

  • Iona is 14-16 in the season,11-8 in the MAAC, and currently in a three-way tie for fourth place.
  • The Gaels are coming off a pair of wins at Niagara (65-63) and Canisius (82-52) last weekend.
  • Two players are averaging double figures, Dejour Reaves (16.6) and Adam Njie Jr. (12.). Yaphet Moundi is the leader in rebounds (7.0).
  • Iona's offense is 6th in the MAAC (69.1) and 4th in defense (70.2).
