
Pioneers Win Rickerson Cup at Princeton

SHU went 2-1 to secure the cup
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Sacred Heart women's rugby team went 2-1 against Princeton on Saturday afternoon to conclude the regular season. Princeton was raising money for Pancreatic Cancer by hosting the Rickerson Cup, which the Pios won.
"We were honored to be playing for the Rickerson Cup today as it is for a great cause," said Head Coach Michelle Reed. "Princeton is always a great host, and we love playing on the new field, it's beautiful."
Game One – SHU 32, Princeton 17
Sacred Heart kicked off the day with a strong performance in the opening match. The first half was electric, led by Josie O'Donnell who scored a pair of tries for 10 points. Olivia Woods and Julia Arnone each added a try of their own, giving the Pioneers a 20–7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the momentum continued. Viola Koning and Reagan Vander-Heide each tallied tries, and Reese Torticill added a crucial conversion to seal a 32–17 victory.
Game Two – SHU 64, Princeton 0
The Pioneers took a commanding 64-0 victory in game two. O'Donnell picked up where she left off, scoring another two tries in the first half, joined by Makena Wright and Ashley Torres Brown, leading 24–0 at the half.
After the break, SHU added 40 more points with tries from Sarah Gray, Marley Gurmendi, Samantha Melvin, Koning, and Hayley Galbraith. Koning had five conversions as Sacred Heart secured the 64-0 win.
Game Three – Princeton 12, SHU 7
Sacred Heart fell in its last game of the day, 12-7. Caroline Woelfel scored the lone try of the first half, and Galbraith's conversion gave the Pios a 7–0 lead at the break. However, Princeton answered in the second half, scoring 12 points to secure the 12-7 final.
"Our team has built a great connection over this season, and you can see it through the joy they bring while playing together," added Reed. "So many great moments of rugby happened today through creative and selfless play. I am excited that this was our springboard into next week's CRAA 7s Championship Tournament."
