Women's Volleyball Concludes Spartan Classic against Queens

Three Pioneers tallied 10+ kills

Greensboro, N.C. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team concluded play at the 2025 Spartan Classic with a 3-0 loss to Queens (N.C.) on Saturday morning in Greensboro, N.C.

Three Pioneers finished with 10+ kills. Lauren Hubert led the group with 14 kills, while Emily Sawyer and Ryleigh Short each had 10. Abbie Hagedorn led the way on defense with 14 digs. Ava Roodbol cracked 30 assists again with 34 against the Royals.

How It Happened:
The opening set started off with both teams trading runs. Queens led by two early on, 7-5, before SHU swung the match back with a 3-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. More back-and-forth play ensued as the score sat tied at 21-all late. A 4-0 surge by the Royals swung the match in their favor, as they finished off a 25-21 win. 

SHU held the lead midway through the second set, 15-13, before Queens put together a 4-0 surge to build a 17-15 advantage. The Pios fought back to cut the margin to two, 20-18, but the Royals held on for a 25-20 victory. 

The Royals stormed out to a 17-11 advantage before the Pios started to rally. SHU led by five 21-16 before five straight Pios' points tied the score at 22-22. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, a 3-0 run by Queens sealed a 3-0 loss for SHU.

Sacred Heart opens the three-day Sacred Heart Invitational on Friday, Sept. 5, with a 6 p.m. match against LIU at the Pitt Center.
