SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's rugby's grey squad suffered a 43-7 loss at AIC on Sunday evening in Springfield, Mass.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the action in the first half, building a 26-0 lead by the break.
SHU broke onto the scoreboard in the second half with a try from
Josie O'Donnell. First year flanker
Niamh McLaughlin capped the play with a conversion to give the Pios seven points.
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, O'Donnell's try was the last of their scoring tonight. AIC added 17 points in the second half to secure the home win.
"Cross divisional matches allow us a chance to provide valuable minutes to our B-side," said head coach
Michelle Reed. "AIC is an aggressive and skilled team and as the DII NIRA Champions last year, we knew this would be a competitive match."
"Scrumhalf and first-year,
Lily Perez, showed great resilience and composure directing the team and making key turnovers while under a lot of pressure. Several other first-years showed their physicality with big tackle numbers from
Ava Steed,
Niamh McLaughlin,
Carlee Harwood, and
Sarah Lyons. Juniors, Reagan Vander Heidi,
Julia Arnone, and
Josie O'Donnell created a relentless energy throughout the match and did a great job leading the team."
"We improved throughout the match and had moments of brilliance. These matches are like looking into the future for SHU Rugby and I am excited for the development of these young players."
The Pios return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, for their home opener against Dartmouth at 11 a.m. at Park Ave Field.
