Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth at Battle at the Creek

Burch led the Pioneers in fifth place

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team concluded the Battle at the Creek tournament in fifth place after a challenging round three on Tuesday at the Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del. 

The Pioneers carded a 320 (+36) as a team on Tuesday, sitting at the end of a hard-fought third-, fourth- and fifth-place battle. SHU finished with a combined score of 928 (305-303-320), which is 76 over par. The Pios were three strokes shy of tying FDU (+73) in fourth and five strokes off third-place Lehigh (+71). Bucknell claimed the top prize at 47 strokes over par, just edging Columbia (+49) in second. 

SHU maintained its advantage over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) programs Mount St. Mary's (+89), Fairfield (+95), Manhattan (+107) and Iona (+183). 

On the individual leaderboard, Jessie Burch capped her strong senior debut in fifth place. The Dublin, Calif., native held the outright coming into the day but fell back slightly to take fifth with a final score of 224 (+11) after rounds of 72, 70 and 82. Burch one-under 70 in round two still stands as the best round of the tournament. 

Maegan Pungsuwan saw an impressive climb up the leaderboard today after carding a third-round 75 (+4). The first year carded rounds of 81, 74 and 75 to finish in a tie for 14th at 230 (+17). 

Maite Cantu, Garance Gueubel and Jade Haylock placed next for SHU in T29th, 38th and T39th. Cantu ended the tournament with a combined score of 237 (+24), while Gueubel and Haylock were separated by one stroke at 239 (+26) and 240 (+27). 

Nahia Paulerena (+34), Lauren Ogrodowicz (+35) and Morgan Withington (+41) completed SHU's competitors at the event in T51st, 54th and T64th, respectively. 

The Pioneers are back in action next week at the Red Bandanna Invitational, beginning with rounds one and two on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Blue Hills Country Club in Milton, Mass.
