MILFORD, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University women's golf team opened the SHU Fall Classic with a strong showing, as "Team A" concluded the first round with a score of 303 (+27) to take an 11-stroke lead over the field. Boston University sits in second at 314 (+40), just one shot ahead of Merrimack (315, +41).
Second-round play was suspended due to darkness and will resume early tomorrow morning at Great River Golf Club.
Sophomores Maite Cantu and Nahia Paulerena paced the Pioneers, both ranking in the top five individually. Cantu fired a 138 (+3) to tie for first with BU's Wendy Li, while Paulerena followed with a 142 (+5), good for fourth place.
Jessie Burch and Jade Haylock added to the strong start, carding rounds of 143 (+8) and 145 (+9) to sit eighth and ninth, respectively. Garance Gueubel turned in a 148 (+11) to tie for 14th, while Maegan Pungsuwan (151, +15) and Shirley Ye (152, +15) are tied for 29th.
Morgan Withington tied for 39th with an 155 (+18), followed by Lauren Ogrodowicz and Una Karen Guðmundsdóttir, who are part of a three-way tie for 54th after rounds of 146 (+24) and 164 (+24). Catherine Fennelly closed the lineup in 70th with a 173 (+34).
The SHU Fall Classic continues Tuesday, Sept. 30, with the completion of round two at 7:15 a.m., followed by the third and final round.
