CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Sacred Heart University softball team concluded play at the Lowcountry Classic this weekend with a 7-2 setback to UMass at the Softball Stadium at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C.
Team Records:
Sacred Heart (1-4)
UMass (3-6)
UMass 7, SHU 2
Pitchers:

Top Performers:
Charlene Davis – 2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 double
Cierra Bender – 2-4, 1 run, 1 double
How It Happened:
The Pioneers got the jump on the Minutewomen in the first inning, putting two runs on the scoreboard to open the game. SHU opened the game with four hits in the first, starting with a double from Cierra Bender. Charlene Davis brought in the game's first run with a single to left. Nicole Henke then plated Davis with a double down the left field line to make it 2-0 SHU.
Unfortunately for the Pios, this would be the end of their offensive production. SHU had chances to score, finishing with nine hits and having a hit in all but one inning. Despite getting to the bases, the Pioneers were not able to break back onto the scoreboard.
However, UMass' offense caught fire starting in the fourth inning. The Minutewomen scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and one in the fifth to build a 7-2 lead. A 1-2-3 seventh sealed the win for UMass.
Sam Kowalski handled most of the game in the circle for SHU, going 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Emily Campion got the Pios their final out of the game.

In the first five games of the season, Bender set a new career high with four doubles.
