Sacred Heart standout competes on continental stage in Saudi Arabia
FAIRFIELD, CONN. — The Sacred Heart University Men's Soccer star Danny Istambouli represented the Lebanon U-23 National Team at the AFC 2026 U-23 Asian Cup, held earlier this month in Saudi Arabia.
Istambouli appeared in two matches during the tournament, competing against some of Asia's top programs. He saw action on January 10 against South Korea U-23 and again on January 13 versus Iran U-23, gaining valuable experience on one of the sport's biggest international stages.
Entering the competition, Istambouli was projected as a key contributor for Lebanon, with analysts highlighting his impact and versatility in midfield. One tournament preview described him as:
"A product of the US university system, Istambouli embodies Lebanon's fearless approach. His energy, pressing and goals from midfield will be vital as the debutants take on Asia's elite."
The international opportunity capped a strong fall season at Sacred Heart, which Istambouli credited for preparing him for the demands of international play.
"Playing in the Asian Cup was an unforgettable experience and a proud moment for me and for Lebanon," Istambouli said. "My season this past fall at Sacred Heart gave me confidence and rhythm that carried over into international play, and I'm super thankful for the environment and support that allowed me to grow and perform on such a big stage."
Istambouli's selection and performance continue Sacred Heart men's soccer's tradition of competing at the international level as well as the professional level.
