The senior was named the Player of the Week after hitting .615 in four SHU wins
EDISON, N.J. — For the third straight week, Sacred Heart University softball standout Sam Kowalski earned a weekly award from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), this time being named the league's Player of the Week.
After back-to-back Pitcher of the Week nods, Kowalski collects her first Player of the Week honor after excelling on both offense and defense. She played a key role in SHU going 4-0 on the week with doubleheader sweeps of both Yale and Niagara.
Kowalski led the Pioneers at the plate with a .615 batting average (8-for-13), five RBIs and two doubles. She also tallied three runs and a home run. The San Clemente, Calif., native started the week with a 3-for-3 showing in the opener against Yale, driving in a run with a double to lead SHU to a 2-0 win, which she was the starting pitcher. Kowalski then had multiple hits in both games against Niagara, starting with a two-RBI showing in her start, a 3-0 Pios win. She followed that up with three more hits, two runs, two RBIs and another double in a 13-4 triumph in six innings in the nightcap.
In the circle, Kowalski went 2-0 with two complete-game wins. She maintained a 0.00 ERA, allowing four hits across 14.0 innings, holding opposing hitters to a paltry .091.
The Pioneers have a road doubleheader against UMass Lowell this afternoon at 3 p.m.
