SHU won 7-0 behind a five-RBI game from Davis
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team clinched a series win over Siena on Sunday afternoon with a convincing 7-0 triumph at Pioneer Park. The battery of Charlene Davis and Sam Kowalski combined to control the action in the contest, as the former tallied five RBIs and the latter threw a complete-game gem
Team Records:
Sacred Heart (4-11, 2-1 MAAC)
Siena (5-8, 1-2 MAAC)
SHU 7, Siena 0
Pitchers:
Sam Kowalski (SHU) - (W, 7.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 5 strikeouts, 3-5 record)
Violet Marta (Siena) - (L, 3.0 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 1 strikeout, 4-4 record)
Gracie Goewey (Siena) - (3.0 innings pitched, 2 earned runs)
Top Performers:
Charlene Davis – 3-3, 5 RBIs, 1 double
Elle Leckrone – 1-3, 2 runs, 1 walk
How It Happened:
The Pios wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, needing just four at-bats in the first inning to go ahead 1-0. Elle Leckrone started the frame with a walk before being driven home with a sac bunt. Davis then singled to left field to drive Leckrone home.
After a scoreless second inning, SHU added three more runs in the third. The Pioneers quickly loaded the bases with a single, an error and a missed tag. Davis cleared the bags with a double to right center, making it 4-0 Pios.
Sacred Heart added to the advantage with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 7-0. A walk and two singles brought in the first run before Katherine Burras plated the second with a sac fly. An errant throw from the opposing catcher on a steal attempt led to the final run as Jess Brown scored from third on the throw.
With the way she has been pitching this weekend, a seven-run cushion for Kowalski almost seemed unfair. The senior allowed just five hits while striking out five batters in her second complete-game win over the weekend.
