
Softball Clinches Postseason Spot with Win at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team clinched the fourth seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship with a thrilling 9-6 comeback win over Quinnipiac in the Pios' regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened:
The Pioneers jumped on the Bobcats early, hanging five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Elle Leckrone kicked off the game with a leadoff double before Ella Stoops drove her home with a one-out single. Alexa Barbera plated the next run with a single before a Nicole Henke two-run double, and an ensuing throwing error made it 5-0.
The Bobcats settled in from there, scoring a run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth to make it 5-4 SHU.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, Quinnipiac plated two runners in the sixth to take its first lead of the game, 6-5.
With their backs against the wall in the seventh, the Pios showed no signs of stress. Leckrone and Cierra Bender started the inning with singles before a walk from Stoops. Charlene Davis wasted no time giving the visitors the lead back, 7-6, with a two-run single. Sacrifice flies from both Barbera and Henke followed as the Pios went into the bottom of the seventh with a 9-6 advantage.
Emily Campion slammed the door shut on the Bobcats in the seventh, capping a stellar relief appearance for the first year. Campion went 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs to win her fifth game of the season. Emily Heath started, throwing the first 3.2 innings and giving up two earned runs.
