BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — For the first time this season, the Sacred Heart University field hockey team has earned NEC weekly honors, as sophomore goalkeeper Ruby Butler was named Defensive Player of the Week and first-year forward Riley Schultz was selected as Rookie of the Week.
Both Pioneers earned NEC weekly honors for the first time in their careers.
In Sacred Heart's 2-1 victory at Dartmouth on Sunday, Schultz scored both goals, recording her first career points. She put the Pioneers on the board in the first quarter, redirecting a shot from Joey Pompeo to give Sacred Heart an early 1-0 lead. Dartmouth answered in the second quarter to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Schultz netted her second goal of the afternoon in the third quarter, which stood as the game-winner as the Pioneers secured their first victory of the season.
Butler anchored the Sacred Heart defense in the victory, tying her career high with five saves to earn her first win of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper made two saves in the second half, keeping Dartmouth off the scoreboard and preserving the Pioneers' one-goal advantage.
Sacred Heart returns home to open NEC play against Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Field.
