Pios Sweep Knights in Midweek non-Conference Matchup

Fairfield, Conn. – Senior right side Lauren Hubert stepped up down the stretch to lead the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a sweep of the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in the first midweek contest of the season for the Pioneers. With the victory, Sacred Heart improves to 6-4 on the season heading into its final two non-conference tests of the year.
Hubert led the Pios offense with 19 kills which came on a .368 average as she took 38 total attempts with just five errors. Overall, she was one of two Pioneers in double figures with sophomore outside hitter Ryleigh Short closing out her first start of the season with 11 kills and a .226 average. Abbie Hagedorn followed with eight kills.

How it Happened
Returning from its west coast trip, the Pioneers earned their second-straight win and third sweep of the season behind the strength of their senior right side hitter Hubert who finished with 19 kills.
The Knights kept things interesting in the early part of the evening with a total of nine ties and three lead changes in the opening set with Sacred Heart earning the 26-24 win to earn the early advantage. Short capped off the Pioneers victory in the opening set with one of eight total service aces on the evening.
Sacred Heart took the early 7-3 lead in the second set before going on to win by a 25-19 advantage thanks to a nearly perfect second set from Hubert who finished with six kills in nine attempts for a .667 average.
The third set was another back-and-forth battle before the Pios won 11 of 13 points to take a 17-9 advantage midway through and never looked back. Hubert was once again the leading Pio jn the third set as she racked up eight kills on a .400 attack percentage.
Up Next
The Pios final tests before opening up Metro Conference play awaits as Sacred Heart will head to Cambridge, Mass. for two matches as part of the Harvard Invitational this coming weekend. SHU will begin the two-day event with a Saturday evening matchup against Providence College (6:00 PM) before taking on the hosts on Sunday afternoon (4:00 PM).
