(New Britain, CT) – Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) pitched his third straight complete game, and John Murphy went 4-5 as the Sacred Heart Pioneers beat the Bryant Bulldogs 8-2 Friday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field.
Scribner improved to 6-2, shutting down the Bulldogs on one earned run and seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He kept the Bulldogs off balance, mixing in his breaking ball all game, and inducing 15 groundouts. He is now 4-0 over his last five starts.
The Pioneers produced the game's first two runs in the second, beginning with a sacrifice fly by Derick Horn (Valatie, NY). Then, Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) singled to left, sending Hunter Phillips (Monore, CT) to third safely on a close play. As he slid into third, Boisture took second and drew a throw, allowing Phillips to race home with a head-first slide on another close play to steal a two-out run.
SHU added three in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY), an RBI double to right-center by Phillips, and an infield RBI single by Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT). Horn drove in another run with a two-out RBI single to shallow center in the fifth. After Bryant got on the board with an unearned run on Jordan English's RBI single, the Pioneers added another two in the sixth on a two-run single to right by Phillips.
Phillips, MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY), and JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) all had three hits each to go along with Murphy's four, pacing a 17-hit attack for SHU. The Pioneers have now won nine straight NEC games, and nine of their last 10 overall. SHU hosts Bryant in a doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
