Link’s Multi-Homer Day Highlights Split with Fairfield

Fairfield, Conn. -- Sacred Heart powered its way to a comeback win in game one behind Peter Link’s two-home run performance and an explosive middle innings surge before Fairfield responded in game two, as the teams split Saturday’s doubleheader at Veterans Park.

How It Happened
Bryan Matuschat came out sharp, recording two strikeouts in the first inning and two more in the second, but Fairfield pushed across an early run.
Peter Link answered immediately in the bottom half, launching a solo home run to tie the game at 1–1. Matuschat added another strikeout in the third, though Fairfield used a three-run inning to take a 4–1 lead. Link responded again in the bottom of the third with his second solo homer of the day, cutting the deficit to 4–2.
Fairfield added another run in the fourth, while Matuschat bounced back with a clean 1-2-3 fifth inning.
Sacred Heart began to chip away in the bottom half as Gavin Donohue doubled and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ronan Donohue. CJ Nolan then used aggressive baserunning, stealing both second and third before Daniel Rice III brought him home with an RBI single, trimming the deficit to 5–4.
After Fairfield added one more in the sixth, the Pioneers exploded for an eight-run inning to take control.
Link was hit by a pitch, JW Fitzgerald walked, and Gavin Donohue, Nolan, and Ronan Donohue were all hit by pitches to force in two runs. Will Rudolph then broke it open with a bases-clearing double, and Rice followed with an RBI double of his own. Link added an RBI single, stole second, and later came around to score on another hit from Gavin Donohue as Sacred Heart surged in front 12–7.
PJ Rogan shut the door out of the bullpen, recording a strikeout in the seventh and two more in the eighth as the Pioneers closed out the 12–7 victory.

How It Happened
Fairfield struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Ryan Parker settled in quickly, recording a strikeout in the first before dominating through the early frames. Parker struck out all three batters he faced in the second, added another in the third, and picked up his sixth strikeout in the fourth.
Fairfield broke things open in the fourth with four runs to take a 5–0 lead, but Sacred Heart answered in the bottom half. Ronan Donohue worked a walk and later came around to score after Nathan Bowes reached on an error, cutting the deficit to 5–1.
Fairfield continued to add on with two runs in the fifth, five more in the sixth, and another in the seventh to extend its lead.
Sacred Heart responded in the bottom of the seventh as Wilson singled and Will Cook doubled before Peter Link drove both runners home with a double. Gavin Donohue followed with a single, and CJ Nolan brought in another run on a groundout to make it 14–4.
Jon Peterson came on in relief and recorded strikeouts in both the eighth and ninth innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Gavin Donohue launched a solo home run, and after Nolan walked, Daniel Rice doubled to bring home another run. The late rally was not enough, as the Pioneers fell 15–6.
