SHU Baseball Set to Begin NEC Play in Home Opening Series Against CCSU This Weekend

(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart Baseball team begins its Northeast Conference title defense in earnest Friday afternoon when the Pioneers host the CCSU Blue Devils in both the home and conference opener.  The Pioneers kick off the four-game series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday at 3:00 pm, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 pm, and the finale Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Sacred Heart (1-10) is coming off a 1-6 trip through Florida last week, with the Pioneers' lone win coming against the Pitt Panthers of the Big East on March 6 in a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.   CCSU (4-5) comes into the series winners of three in a row, including a 5-4 extra-innings win against Albany in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon.

Hunter Phillips leads the way at the plate for SHU, coming into the series hitting .350 (14-40), leading the team in hits and OBP (.381).  Dylan Delacruz starts the year for CCSU strong with a .314 average (11-35), highest among everyday starters, leading the team with 11 hits and five doubles.

Probable starters for the series are:

Friday: RHP Todd Savatsky vs. RHP Troy Scribner
Saturday (Game 1): LHP Jack Greenhouse vs. LHP Nick Leiningen
Saturday (Game 2): LHP Cody Brown vs. RHP Robbie Maguire
Sunday: LHP Casey Brown vs. RHP Kody Kerski

For fans planning on coming to the games on Saturday, please note that the First Round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament will be on going throughout the day next door at Webster Bank Arena.  Parking is expected to be limited, but fans coming for the baseball game are encouraged to arrive early and look for parking in LOT A, located on the first base side of the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

A free audio stream of the live play-by-play will be available for all four games.  Randy Brochu returns for a second season of play-by-play, while former Pioneer Baseball great Steve Tedesco joins him in the booth as the color announcer.  The games can be heard all weekend by following this link.
