(Brooklyn, NY) – The Sacred Heat Baseball team split a doubleheader with the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds Saturday afternoon, earning a series win with a 5-1 loss followed by a 6-3 win.

The Pioneers responded from a game one loss with an 11-inning win thanks to a three-run double by John Murphy to break a 3-3 extra-innings tie and give SHU a 6-3 lead.

LIU-Brooklyn took an early lead with an RBI groundout by Pete Leonello in the first and an RBI single by Tyler Jones in the second.  However, Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) doubled to left to give SHU its first run in the third.  The Pioneers waited three innings to tie the game on an RBI double by Matt Charmello (Rossmorr, CA) in the sixth.

Leonello gave the Blackbirds a short-lived lead in the seventh with a solo homerun to center in the seventh, but SHU tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single to right by Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT).

In the first game, Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) hit his first career homerun to left to lead off the game.  Drew Walsh tied the game for the Blackbirds with an RBI single in the next half-inning.  Chris Untereiner doubled to left to give LIU-Brooklyn the lead in the second.  The Blackbirds ran away with the game with a three-run sixth on an RBI single by Melvin Rios, a run-scoring wild pitch and error, and RBI grounds-rule double by Brad Greve.

The Pioneers host cross-town rival Fairfield at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
