Baseball Clinches Berth in NEC Tournament with 3-2 Win Over Bryant

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University baseball team defeated NEC-foe Bryant, 3-2 in extra innings at home Friday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers have clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament for the 10th time in 11 years.

The Pioneers moved to 19-31-1 on the year and 11-12 in NEC-play, while the Bulldogs fell to 37-18 on the season and 18-5 in conference play.

John Cerretani earned the win after giving up one hit and striking out two in 3.1 innings of shutout relief. Justin Levito went 1-for-1 with an RBI pinch-hit single to walk it off for the Pioneers.

NOTES (SHU 3, Bryant 2):

  • Ryan LaMay got the start and took the no-decision after giving up two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings of work

  • John Cerretani earned the win after giving up one hit and striking out two in 3.1 innings of shutout relief

  • Stephen Thibault went 1-for-4 with a two-run double, a walk and a stolen base

  • Elijah Brown went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run scored

  • Justin Levito went 1-for-1 with the game-winning RBI single

  • The Pioneers broke the scoreless tie after Thibault drilled a two-run double to left to give SHU a 2-0 lead in the fourth

  • Bryant tied the contest after plating two runs in the seventh inning to knot the game at 2-2

  • Taking a 2-2 tie into the bottom of the 10th, Levito drilled an RBI single to left to secure the 3-2 walk-off victory for the Pioneers
