Spellman Tallies Program-Record Nine Blocks in Men's Basketball's 62-38 Win Over Wagner

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's basketball tied the program-record for least points allowed in a contest, as the Pioneers defeated Wagner, 62-38, Monday afternoon on Coach Bike Court in the Pitt Center. The win improved the Pioneers to 8-11 overall and 4-2 in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 8-9 on the year and and 3-3 in NEC action.

The Pioneers had three players score in double-figures, with E.J. Anosike leading the way with 19 points. Jare'l Spellman tallied nine blocks in the win, setting the SHU Div. I program-record for most blocks in a game.

  • The Pioneers used the opening 8:24 of the half to jump out to an 18-3 lead with 11:36 remaining in the half

  • The Pioneers had five different players score on the run, with Sean Hoehn scoring seven

  • After Wagner went on a 12-8 run to cut the SHU lead to 26-15 with 3:55 remaining in the half, the Pioneers used the remaining 2:06 to go on a 6-0 run to take a 32-15 lead into halftime

  • Wagner's 15 points in the first half marked the lowest total of points SHU has given up in any half of play this season

  • SHU held Wagner to 5-for-26 (19.2%) from the field in the half

  • Hoehn scored 11 points in the first half

SECOND HALF

  • Wagner came out the half and used the first 9:06 of the half to cut SHU's lead to 42-28 with 10:54 remaining

  • SHU responded with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 21 points (49-28), its largest of the game

  • Wagner cut the score to as low as 51-36, before the Pioneers closed the game on 11-2 run to secure the 62-38 win.

NOTES

  • Wagner scored a total of 38 points, tying the SHU program-record for least points allowed in a contest which was originally set on Dec. 29, 1987 when the Pioneers held Franklin Pierce to 38 points

  • The Pioneers held the Seahawks to 18% shooting (11-for-61) for the game, the lowest total of the season

  • Jare'l Spellman recorded eight points, eight rebounds and nine blocks in the win

  • Spellman's nine blocks sets the SHU Div. I program-record

  • SHU had three players score in double-figures, with E.J. Anosike's 19 points leading the way

  • Anosike also grabbed nine rebounds in the win

  • Sean Hoehn added 15 points and five rebounds in the win

  • Aaron Clarke scored 11 points off the bench
