FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart football coaching staff has announced Pioneer team captains for the 2019 campaign. The captains for the season are fifth-year running back Jordan Meachum, fifth-year safety Noah Provenzano, senior cornerback Shawn Ramcheran, senior defensive end Chris Agyemang and senior center Josh Sokol.
All five enter their first season as captains for the Pioneers as they look to lead SHU in their search for a fourth Northeast Conference title since 2013.
A steady contributor throughout his SHU career, Meachum took a giant leap in 2018 with 1,396 rushing yards on 225 carries with 11 touchdowns. He added 18 receptions for 237 yards to give him 1,633 all-purpose yards in 11 games last season. Meachum has missed just one game in his career and enters his fifth and final season as a Pioneer with 1,952 career rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.
Another five-year contributor to the Pioneers, Provenzano spearheads a defensive backfield that returns all four starters from last season. After contributing largely on special teams the previous two seasons, Provenzano took on a starring role in 2018 with 46 total tackles (30 solo, 16 assisted) with two forced fumbles and two interceptions while playing in all 11 games. His 46 total tackles was the second-most among all defensive backs on the roster while he took his first career interception all the way back for a 71-yard touchdown against Lafayette.
Ramcheran returned to form in 2018 after missing the entire 2017 campaign due to injury. He appeared in all 11 games and totaled 14 tackles (all solo) including two tackles for loss. His efforts along the edge at cornerback helped lift the Pioneers to the best pass defense in the NEC last season (148.8 passing yards allowed per game).
Agyemang enjoyed a breakout 2018 campaign in which the then-junior earned Division I All-New England Team and All-NEC First Team honors. He ranked fourth in the NEC with seven total sacks as well as 15.5 tackles for loss while appearing in all 11 games. Agyemang ranked second on the team with 55 total tackles and racked up three games with more than one sack in 2018.
The lynchpin paving the way for the NEC's top ranked rushing offense last season, Sokol anchored the SHU offensive line, starting all 11 games in 2018 at the center position. The team's primary starter at center over the last two seasons, Sokol was a key reason behind the Pioneers averaging an NEC-leading 241.1 rushing yards per game last season.
The 2019 season begins in nearly two weeks as the Pioneers open the new campaign at the No. 7 nationally-ranked University of Maine on Friday, August 30th for a 6 PM kickoff. SHU's home opener is the following weekend as the Pioneers welcome Bucknell for a 6 PM start. Single game and season tickets are available to purchase above.
