
Colgate Nets Late Goal to Drop Sacred Heart, 2-1

FAIRFIELD, CT (October 29, 2002) - Colgate sophomore Peter Bourquin snapped a 1-1 tie with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, knocking his shot off the cross bar and in to give the Raiders a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-12-2 while Colgate improves to 7-6-2.
The Raiders opened the scoring early on when senior midfielder Jon Gellman converted his penalty kick at the 7:35 mark. The Pioneers held Colgate scoreless until their own attack could produce a goal at 68:52 of the second half. Senior Franco Cartiera (New Britain, CT) netted his team leading seventh goal of the season sneaking his shot just past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Jonathan Brunell into the right corner. The game remained scoreless and appeared headed for overtime before Bourquin's game winner.
SHU goalkeeper Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) and Brunell were forced to make just two saves apiece on the afternoon.
Sacred Heart returns to action Friday, October 29 when the travel to Central Connecticut for a 3 p.m. match.
