FAIRFIELD, CT (October 4, 2002) - Junior Oskar Tilly fired a shot into the left corner of the net in the 59th minute to give Long Island University a 2-0 advantage en route to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference action Friday afternoon. Tilly's goal, which proved to be the game winner, moved the Blackbirds to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEC. SHU falls to 0-8-2 and 0-3-1 in the conference.
Parris opened the scoring in the 25th minute of play, finding the upper right corner of the net on a header from junior David Schofield corner kick. LIU threatened to make it 2-0 right before the half as midfielder Andreas Stark lofted a shot headed for the back of the net over freshman goalkeeper Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) when sophomore Jeff Monaco (Carmel, NY) swept in to head the ball away and keep it a 1-0 deficit heading into the half.
Tilly's strike gave Long Island a 2-0 advantage and it appeared the Blackbirds would run away with the game when Sacred Heart's offense began to apply some offensive pressure. The Pioneers capitalized on a handball in the box in the 68th minute, as senior co-captain Franco Cartiera (New Britain, CT) knocked home the penalty kick notching his third goal of the season and cutting the lead to 2-1. SHU kept the pressure on in the final minutes but were unable to get a solid scoring chance.
Marchese made four saves in goal for the Pioneers while, LIU sophomore Richard Gorski needed to make just one save in picking up the win.
Sacred Heart will be back in action on Sunday, October 6th as they play host to NEC foe St. Francis (PA) at 2 pm.
