Marquette Snaps Pioneer Win Streak, 76-49

MILWAUKEE, WI (December 21, 2002) - The Marquette University Golden Eagles used a superb shooting night to pick-up their fifth-straight win and send the Sacred Heart Pioneers home for the holidays with a 76-49 loss Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles held a seven point half-time lead, 37-30, and ripped off a 24-2 run in the second half to put the game out of reach. Sacred Heart, who played strong defense in the first half converting 11 Marquette turnovers into 11 points, struggled offensively, going 13 minutes to start the second half without a field goal and managed just two free throws over a 0-22 stretch.
Marquette sophomore Katie Alsdurf had the hot hand all night for the Golden Eagles, who shot 52.0% (26-50) from the field, 54.5% (6-11) from three and 72.0% (18-25) from the free throw line in the win. Alsdurf finished with a team-high 13 points on five-of-six shooting and a perfect three-of-three from behind the arc. Senior center Rachel Klug chipped in with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Golden Eagles, now 6-2 on the year, had 11 players find the scoring column on the afternoon, and outscored the Pioneers 39-19 in the second half.
SHU freshman Nicolle Rubino (Port Jefferson Station, NJ) led all Pioneer scorers with 14 points in the loss. Senior Brooke Rutnik had a very strong first half, posting 10 points and four rebounds while playing inspired basketball. Rutnik was held to just one make in the second half, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Brooke Kelly (Medford, NJ) tallied 11 points and four rebounds while senior Ashley Durmer (Nashua, NH) was held scoreless on the day.
The Pioneers, now 4-2 on the year, will return to action on December 29th as they travel to Columbia University for a 2 pm start.
