Freshman Eoin Lynch scored what would prove to be the deciding goal 24 minutes into the game to lead Providence College to a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart University at the Central Connecticut Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Ian Wexler opened the scoring for Providence, 1-0, in the contest with a goal at the 7:59 mark from freshman Brian Baker (Annapolis, MD).
Sacred Heart, 0-1, drew within a goal at the 30:08 mark when sophomore Alan Tomczykowski (Bedford, MA) knocked home a pass from senior Matt Christianson (Danville, NJ).
The two teams played a scoreless second half. Sacred Heart held the territorial advantage for most of the period and had the best chance to score with 6:45 left. Senior Jorge DeSousa (Milford, CT) blasted a shot from 25 yards out that Providence goalie Michael Greulich stopped. The rebound went out to Neal Shapiro (Glenwood, NJ) who fired a shot from point blank range, but Greulich knocked that away as well.
Providence outshot the Pioneers 10-7.
Sacred Heart will take on Buffalo in the second round of the tournament on Sunday at noon.
