Emmitsburg, MD - The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team had its biggest offensive outburst of the season, but a late goal by Mount St. Mary's Brandon Scarfield spoiled the Pioneer's fun and resulted in a 3-3 overtime tie in a Northeast Conference tilt Friday afternoon.
Libby, who scored in his second consecutive match, fired a low liner into the left corner off a crossing pass from fellow freshman Luke Strutt (Sheffield, England/All Saints RC) just five minutes into the second half. Libby struck again less than three minutes later when sophomore forward Kurt Borel (Trinidad, West Indies/Vessisny Secondary) tossed a perfectly placed throw-in on the far side of the goal that Libby short-hopped into the net.
The Pioneers opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from Jorge DeSousa (Milford, CT) 11 minutes into the contest. Senior Franco Cartierra knocked home the second Pioneer goal when he scored on the rebound of his shot off Mount goalkeeper Brian Crum.
The Mountaineers stormed back in the second half and a pair of goals by John Libby tied the score. His first came just five minutes into the second half, and the second came just five minutes later.
Sacred Heart retook the lead on a three-on-none breakaway goal by Matt Christiannson at the 63:40 mark.
The Mount tied it on the fifth goal of the year by senior Brandon Scarfield at the 74:42 mark. Both sides had opportunities in the two 10-minute overtime periods but failed to convert.
The draw was the second straight for the 0-5-2 Pioneers. The Mount's record is now 3-3-1.
