BALTIMORE, MD (September 29, 2002) - Freshman Marcus Gross scored what would prove to be the deciding goal at 63:49 of the second half to lead UMBC to a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart University this afternoon.
Sophomore Derek McElligott opened the scoring for UMBC, 4-4-2, in the contest with a goal at the 61:25 mark off a pass from Matt McGowan. Gross scored 2:24 minutes later off a penalty kick to put the game away for the Retrievers.
The Pioneers, 0-6-2, cut the lead in half, scoring their lone goal off the foot of freshman Nick Loyd (Plymouth, MN) at the 71:25 mark, as he rocketed home a 16 yard shot. SHU would catch a huge break, as Gross received a red card in the 75th minute, putting the Retrievers a man down. UMBC would buckle down, and hold the Pioneers without a quality scoring chance the rest of the way.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Tuesday, October 1st as the travel to West Point to take on Army at 7 PM.
