BROOKLYN, NY (October 28, 2003)- The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team ended a six game skid with a 2-1 win at St. Francis (NY). Freshman Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute to give the Pioneers the win.
Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead 10-minutes into the game when a little luck bounced their way as a St. Francis defender tried to head the ball away, but instead had it deflect into the Terriers goal. The Terriers would tie the game just 50 seconds later as Mbwana Johnson buried a cross from Damier Walker.
The game would remain tied into the second half when the Pioneers were awarded a penalty shot eight minutes into the second half, which Mendes was able to convert on with his second goal of the season.
Pioneers sophomore goalkeeper Chris Gray (Concord, MA) made two saves in the match in recording his first win of the season. Paul Varani made three saves for the Terriers in taking the loss.
The Pioneers will next travel to Quinnipiac for a 2:30 PM match on October 31. Sacred Heart will close out their 2003 season on November 2 with a 1:00 PM match against Mt. St. Mary's
