Men's Ice Hockey Outlasts Fairfield, 4-3, in Overtime

BRIDGEPORT, CT (March 6, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Fairfield University, 4-3, in overtime. This marks the last time the Pioneers will meet the Stags on the ice, and come away with a 17-5-4 advantage. Senior Martin Paquet (Ste. Catherine, QUE) scored the game-winner just 59 seconds into overtime.
The Stags got on the board first at 3:32 with a goal by Casey LaFlamme. The Pioneers did not respond until 7:24 in the second period when sophomore Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) found the net, assisted by freshman Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) and Paquet. Senior Michael Forsland (Anchorage, AK) put the Pioneers ahead at 18:45 in thesecond.
Fairfield's Lyn Porter scored twice in the third period to put the Stags ahead of Sacred Heart. Paquet came back with the first of his two goals at 14:31 in the third, from Larson and freshman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA).
Paquet's overtime goal was also assisted by Larson and Chmiel.
Senior goaltender Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) earned the win, making 24 saves. Fairfield goaltender Andrew Martin made 32 saves.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday, March 8th, as they travel to Storrs, CT to take on the UConn Huskies for their final regular season game at 7:30 pm.
