
Providence Men's Soccer Victorious Over Sacred Heart, 6-1

New Britain, CT (August 29, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team opened the 2003 season falling 6-1 to Providence College in the second game CCSU Soccer Cup on Friday afternoon at the Central Connecticut Soccer Field.
Eoin Lynch led the Friars with three goals. Lynch opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game when he knocked in a pass from Anthony Petrarca. The Pioneers answered right back 16 seconds later knotting the score at one off a free kick goal from freshman Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Sao Paulo).
Jonathan Rhode gave the Friars a 2-1 lead going into half time when he netted a goal from a Petrarca pass.
Providence scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Two back-to-back goals from Lynch gave him a hat trick with 27 minutes left in the game. Lynch connected with Rhode's passes on both of the goals at 50:49 and 57:16.
Ian Wexler and Paul Mihich scored five minutes apart at 70:35 and 75:57 to give the Friars the 6-1 win.
Sacred Heart will face Virginia Military in the first game of the second day of play in the CCSU Soccer Cup on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Friars will meet Central Connecticut in the second game at 2:00 p.m.
Sacred Heart will return to action on Wednesday, September 25, when they host Stony Brook at 4 pm.
