NEW BRITAIN, CT - Sacred Heart University senior Carlos Silva (East Haven, CT) scored the only goal of the game at the 30:22 mark to give the Pioneers a 1-0 win over Virginia Military Institute in the Central Connecticut State University Soccer Cup on Sunday afternoon. VMI, 0-2, lost the game despite outshooting Sacred Heart 10-2.
Silva fired his shot into an open net when VMI keeper Morgan Harris came out and was caught out of position in an attempt to stop the ball.
VMI took six shots, only one shot on goal, while Sacred Heart scored on its only shot of the half.
VMI had its best opportunity to tie the score nine minutes into the second half when two back-to-back shots barely missed. The first attempt from Parker Thurman hit the crossbar, and the put back attempt from Kyle Clark was blocked by a SHU defender.
Sophomore goalie Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) picked up the shutout for the 1-1 Pioneers, facing just ten shots and needing to make just one save.
