FAIRFIELD, CT (September 10, 2003)- The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team played to a physical 1-1 tie with the Central Connecticut state Blue Devils. The Pioneers took a 1-0 into the half only to see it slip away by the end of regulation.
Junior Rui Rainho (Bridgeport, CT) game SHU the lead at the 33-minute mark of the game when he buried a pass from freshman Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil). That lead would stand up until the 62nd minute when Caleb Neves put a pass off a corner kick past Pioneers goalkeeper sophomore Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT).
Marchese made eight saves in the match, including one in overtime to preserve the tie for the Pioneers. Blue Devils goalkeeper Andrew Sierman made six saves in the match.
There were three yellow cards issued in the match to Alex Harrison, Nathan Meade and Gareth Wilkinson of Central Connecticut. The two teams combined for 46 fouls in the match that saw heavy contact on nearly every play for the ball.
The Pioneers will play host to three-time defending NEC champions Fairleigh Dickinson on September 14. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Campus Field.
