FAIRFIELD, CT (September 14, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team played a physical and at times ugly match against three time defending NEC champion Fairleigh Dickinson to a 0-0 tie. Both teams were tough on defense, yielding only a couple quality scoring chances for either team.
Sophomre goalkeeper Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) made nine saves in the match for the Pioneers while his counterpart Andrew Nucifora (Monroe, CT) made five saves for the Knights. The Pioneers were out-shot 20-10 in the game.
There were five total cards issued in the game, with the Pioneers receiving four of them. Three of the cards, including one to SHU head coach Joe McGuigan for arguing a call by the referee, were issued in the first half. The Knights received their lone caution in the closing minutes of the first half. Play would settle down until the closing minutes of overtime when SHU received their fourth caution of the game.
While the Pioneers didn't walk away with a win they proved that they will be a tough team to beat this season as they look to qualify for the NEC tournament.
The Pioneers will return to action when they host Northeastern at Campus Field on September 20. The match will kickoff at 2:00 PM. # # # #
