FAIRFIELD, CT (September 2, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team played a hard fought match with the University of Hartford that would end in a 2-2 tie in double overtime. Junior Rui Rainho (Bridgeport, CT) tied the game late in the second half for the Pioneers to send the match into overtime.
The Pioneers opened the scoring just five minutes into the match when junior Carlos Caracas (West Haven, CT) put the ball in the top right corner for the score. Rainho assisted on the goal with a pass from the wing.
That lead would fade quickly as Hartford scored twice in a 2:33 span towards the end of the first half. Junior Alon Lubezky (Kfar Shmaryahu, Israel) headed the ball into the goal off a cross from freshman Kenniel Martin (Hartford, CT). Lubezky would then return the favor as he fed Martin the ball in front of an empty goal as the Hawks took a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) made six saves in the match, including three key saves in overtime to preserve the tie. His counterpart, sophomore Ryan Carr, made seven saves in the match.
SHU senior Carlos Silva (East Haven, CT) contributed with an assist on the goal scored by Rainho.
The Pioneers will return to action when they host Army at Campus Field on Friday September 5. The match will kickoff at 5:00 PM.
