STONY BROOK, NY (September 24, 2003)- The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team ended todays game the way they have ended the last three games as they tied Stony Brook 1-1 on the road. Freshman Eric Bradley (C. Waxford, Ireland) scored his first goal of the season giving the Pioneers a 1-0 halftime lead with an assist from junior Carlos Caracus (West Haven, CT).
That lead would slip away however as Anthony Barberio tied the contest on a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half. The goalkeepers wouldn't allow anything after that.
Sophomore Matthew Weston (Mansfield, CT) made eight saves in his first appearance of the season for the Pioneers. Stony Brook's Dan Ferrin made seven saves for the Sea Wolves, including three in first overtime period.
Both teams had chances to net the go-ahead goal in regulation and in overtime. The best chance was that of SHU's Caracus, who fired a shot from point blank range, only to be stopped by Ferrin.
Bradley has been a leader on the defensive side of the ball, but has also shown the ability to attack as well. He often tries to use his size to his advantage. He is always in on the play in the event of a corner kick and can carry the ball up field and set up his teammates for scoring opportunities of their own.
The Pioneers will be on the road this weekend when they travel to Brown for a 7:00 PM match on Friday night and then make the long trip to Maine for a 1:00 PM match on Saturday afternoon.
