
Men's Soccer defeated On Late Goal at Maine

ORONO, ME (September 27, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team was defeated 3-2 at Maine on Saturday afternoon. Luke Rivard redirected a shot past the Pioneers goalkeeper at 81:44 to notch the game-winning goal.
Justin Stockford gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead at 5:58 when he headed a cross into the net, that lead score would stand at the end of the first half. The Black Bears outshot the Pioneers 10-3 in the first half.
Sacred Heart tied the game at 1-1 when junior Sylvester Kaar (Haward, Calif.) headed pass into the net at 48:53. Stockford tallied his second goal of the game as he broke in alone on SHU sophomore Jason Roeder (Independence, MN) Roeder came out to play Stockford and he went right by him and shot the ball into the open net at 60:35.
That lead would not last long as Sacred Heart scored just 21 seconds later. freshman Ricarti Mendes (Campinas Brazil) fed a wide-open Kaar who was in front of the goal and Maines goalkeeper Chad Mongeon.
Mongeon finished with one save for the Black Bears while Sophomore Chris Marchese (Middletown, CT) and Roeder combined to make 10 saves for the Pioneers. Marchese played in the first half and was replaced by Roeder in the second half.
The Pioneers will return to action when the travel to Robert Morris on October 3 for a 4:00 PM match.
