Final Stats
TROY, NY (January 24, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University men's
ice hockey team fell to Rensselaer 3-0 in a hard fought, physical
game. Kirk McDonald (Victoria, BC) scored the only goal the
Engineers needed in the opening minute of play.
Rensselaer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when McDonald tipped
a shot from the point into the net just 28-seconds into the game.
Nick Economakos (Lockport, IL) took the initial shot and was given
an assist on McDonald's 11th goal of the season.
That score remained that way until the final minute of the
second period when Kevin Croxton (Calgary, AB) slid his 10th goal
of the season past Pioneers goaltender Jason Smith (St.
Lambert, QC), giving the Engineers a 2-0 lead after the second
period. Assisting on the goal were McDonald and Scott Basiuk
(Prince Albert, SK).
The Pioneers had a power play in the closing minute of play and
pulled Smith for a sixth attacker, but to no avail as the Engineers
added an empty net goal from Ben Barr (Faribault, MN) for a 3-0
final score. The goal was his fifth of the season.
Nathan Marsters (Grimsby, ON) made 18 saves in recording the
shutout, his third of the season. Smith made 33 saves and allowed
tow goals for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers were called for 13 penalties totaling 26 minutes,
while Rensselaer was called for eight penalties totaling 16
minutes.
Sacred Heart will return to action on Friday night when they
host Connecticut in the first game of a home-and-home series at
7:00 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Pioneers will then travel
to Storrs, CT for a 7:00 pm game against the Huskies.
