Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -
Junior tailback Ed Pricolo (Johnston, RI) scored a pair of touchdowns and Sacred Heart University took advantage of two Marist College turnovers to score three TDs in 1:55 in the first half to defeat the Red Foxes 38-10 in a non-conference football battle Saturday evening.
Sacred Heart, now 3-3, scored first on a 17-yard pass from sophomore QB Dan Ammel to Pricolo with 11:09 left in the first quarter. The score was set up by a fumble by Marist's Steve Whitlow that was picked up by Pioneer safety Mike Scott (Groton, CT) and returned to the Marist 16.
The Red Foxes, 2-4, started their next possession at their own 19 but engineered a 17-play, 77-yard drive that ended in a 21-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Brad Rowe with 2:11 left in the first. Pricolo, who rushed for over 100 yards for the sixth straight game, answered for the Pioneers with :32 left in the quarter when he ripped off a 58-yard run for his second score of the game.
An interception of Marist QB James Luft at the Red Fox 17 by junior safety Dave Kaloyanides in the final minute set the next Pioneer score. Sophomore receiver Joey Henley (Kent, WA) caught a 7-yard pass in the endzone from Ammel on the final play of the period to give the Pioneers a 21-3 lead.
Freshman tailback Jason Payne gave SHU a 28-3 lead with a 49-yard run for a score on the first play of the drive with 13:37 left in the half.
Bo Ehikioya got the lone Marist touchdown of the game when he finished off and eight-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard plunge for a touchdown with 9:13 to play in the half.
Sacred Heart recorded a safety with 5:00 left in the half when a punt snap sailed over the head of Red Fox kicker Kevin Faughnan into the endzone. Faughnan raced after it and kicked the ball past the end line for the safety. The Pioneers went to the locker room with a 30-10 lead, despite running just 18 offensive plays and holding the ball just a shade over eight minutes.
The second half started nearly as bad for Marist. Another errant snap on a punt went over Faughnan's head and out of the end zone to put SHU up 32-10. On the ensuing kickoff, James Wright closed the scoring for the Pioneers by returning the kick 69 yards for a touchdown.
Pricolo finished the game with 110 yards on 16 carries, extending his school record for consecutive 100-yard performances.
The Pioneers return home next week to host St. Peter's College at 1:00 p.m. on Campus Field.
