HARRISONBURG, VA - Sophomore Rose Barre highlighted a six-run fifth inning for Binghamton University with a three-run homer to lead the Bearcats to a 6-2 win over Sacred Heart University in the opening game of the James Madison Invitational Friday morning.
The two team played the first four innings scoreless. Binghamton, now 6-1-1, started the top of the fifth with a single by Jessica Chellis off SHU starter Bethany Lemenager. A groundout advanced her to second and a single by Marisa DeStasio moved her to third. Barre followed with her three-run blast over the center field fence.
The Bearcats weren't done in the inning. Leigh Ann Savidge followed the homer with a single up the middle. After a fielder's choice ground out, Lemenager walked Nicole Vitello. Jessica Dima then singled to left and the ball was misplayed in the outfield, allowing two runs to score and Dima to advance to third. Chrissy Semon finished the Binghamton rally with a single that plated Dima.
The Pioneers avoided the shutout when freshman Caitlin Carroll hit her first homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth. SHU got another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RNI single by Grace Teruel, who had a pair of hits in the game.
