HARRISONBURG, VA - Junior Emily Ling fired a two-hit shutout, striking out nine, to lead Lehigh University to a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart University in the second game of the James Madison Invitational on Friday.
Lehigh, now 14-5-1, got the only run in would need in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior Jessica Young. The Mountain Hawks got another off SHU starter Danielle Mellin in the third thanks to a double by Shana Treon that scored Julie Sterrett, who had led off the inning with a single.
Lehigh scored three more in the fifth inning, two of them on a triple by sophomore Erin Hengemuhle.
Sacred Heart, now 3-9 and losers of eight straight, managed just two singles in the third inning, an inning that saw the Pioneers lose a big opportunity to take control of the game. Jen Place led off the inning with a walk and Dana Jusino followed with a single to center, after failing twice to get a bunt down. Katie Ross helped the Pioneers load the bases with no one out with a bunt single. Ling then struck out Becky Cameron and got Grace Teruel to ground into a double play back to the pitcher to end the inning.
The Pioneers will face host James Madison on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will then play at either 1:00 or 3:00 p.m., depending on their record in round-robin play.
