
Softball Gains Spilt at Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Sacred Heart University softball team split a doubleheader at Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon as it improved to 6-21 on the season and 3-7 in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers won the second game 7-6 in eight innings to gain a split on the day.
In the opening game the Blue Devils (6-24, 4-6 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Karolyn Andrews reached base on a fielders choice that plated Kristen Kropp with the bases loaded. That was all CCSU could get in the inning as freshman Danielle Mellin struck out Lauren Jester to end the threat.
The Blue Devils made it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the third on a fielders choice that plated Andrews. Central then went up 3-0 in the sixth inning when Kropp scored on an error.
Sacred Heart got on the board in the top of the seventh inning to prevent the shutout. Junior Caitlin Carroll doubled to lead off the inning and freshman Jazzeline Perez, who entered the game to run for Carroll, later scored on an error.
Erin Monroe pitched six innings in recording her third win of the season while Mellin pitched just three inning in taking the loss.
The Pioneers bounced back in the second game with a 7-6 win in eight i9nnings to gain a split in the doubleheader.
SHU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Carroll double that plated sophomore Jen Place and senior Leslie Konsig.
The Pioneers were up 5-0 after scoring two runs in the third and one run in the fifth, but Central came back and plated two runs of their own in the fifth and sixth innins to get within one run of SHU at 5-4.
Sacred heart added a run in the top of the seventh as Carroll singled to drive in Konsig to give the Pioneers a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom half of the seventh Rozanski hit a two-run double to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
SHU regained the lead in the top of the eighth on a Konsig singled to score senior Grace Teruel with the game winning run. CCSU tied to rally in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to score, giving SHU a much needed win.
Freshman Bethany Lemenager pitched all eight inning for the Pioneers with seven strikeouts in recording her third win of the season. Eileen Holden took the loss for the Blue Devils.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Wednesday, April 14th, when it hosts St. Francis (NY) in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
