FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University softball team took game two of the doubleheader against Hartford 3-2 to gain a split on the day after dropping game one 1-0 to the Hawks. Inn that second game the Pioneers (10-26-1) took advantage of two Hartford errors to account for the three runs.
In the first game the Hawks (6-17) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on solo homerun to right field from Amy Sullivan to break the scoreless deadlock and give Hartford the only run it needed in the game. The Pioneers tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth as they has runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to drive in the game-tying run.
Nicole McMillon pitched a complete game shutout for the Hawks to pick up her third win of the year while freshman Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) took the loss for SHU.
The Pioneers came back in the second game to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior Shannon Bailey (Carmel, NY) walked to lead off the inning and after a wild pitch scored on an error by the centerfielder. That lead was pushed to 3-0 the next inning as freshmen Kaitlin Gagnon (Gonic, NH) and Erin Silk (Manalapan, NJ) both scored on an error by the shortstop.
Hartford got two runs back in the top of the third on RBI singles from Mallory Rapoza and Nikki Thompson to make it a 3-2 game. That was all the Hawks were able to get as sophomore Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) shutdown Hartford's offense to record her third win of the season. Caitlin Eichler (Madison, CT) pitched a complete game in taking the loss.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Robert Morris, with the first game scheduled to get under way at 1:00 pm from Pioneers Park.
