
Softball Swept at St. Johns

JAMAICA, NY - The Sacred Heart University softball team was swept in a doubleheader at St. Johns on Wednesday afternoon in Jamaica, NY. The Red Storm shutout the Pioneers in both games.
St. Johns (23-23) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning in game one en route to a 6-0 win. Allina Sainz and Leigh Carlson were both 1-3 with two RBI each in the game for the Red Storm. Sophomore Jen Place (Latham, NY) was 2-for-3 with a triple in the game for SHU.
Courtney Fitzgerald allowed scattered dour hits over seven innings as she threw the complete game shutout. Freshman Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) went four innings and allowed six runs, three earned, in taking the loss.
St. Johns continued to roll in the second game as it plated three runs in three of the teams four at-bats as the Red Storm took game two after just five innings. Christina Tucker lead the way as she was 2-for-3 at the plate with two homeruns and five RBI in the game.
Kimberly Lerch allowed just one base runner as she tossed a five-inning no-hitter to pitch up the win. Sophomore Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) lasted three innings allowing seven runs, six earned, in taking the loss.
Sacred Heart (12-30-1) will close out its 2004 campaign with a doubleheader at Stony Brook with the first game scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
