Richmond, VA - Sophomore Shannon Taylor and junior Heather Wrublesky each scored two goals and Richmond ousthot Sacred Heart 39-5 to win the NCAA field hockey game 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Freshman Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) scored the Pioneers two goals to finish the season with a team leading 10 tallies.
The Spiders jumped on top just 3:48 into the game when senior Collen Wevodau fired a shot from the top of the circle that found its way past Pioneer goaltender Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH). Richmond would go up 2-0 with 20 minutes left in the first corner when senior Allie Howard finished a penalty corner attempt started by Erin Arthur and Michelle LaForce.
The Pioneers would answer just three minutes later when Eye tipped in a shot by senior Nicole Falco (Ocean, NJ) to make it 2-1. However, the Spiders then went on to score three straight goals in a 10 minute span between the two halves, to put the game out of reach. Wrublesky scored what turned out to be the game winner with 8:11 to go in the first half when she found a rebound in front of the net following a Spider penalty corner.
Taylor scored her first goal of the game five minutes later when she fired a shot past Del Greco from the top of the circle. Wrublesky capped the spurt with a goal off a penalty corner 1:32 into the second half.
Eye would score her second goal of the game off a flurry of traffic in front of the net with 13 minutes left in the game. But Taylor would convert another Spider penalty corner and Tara Kelly would add another goal to cap the scoring and send the Spiders on to the NCAA tournament.
The Pioneers finish the season with a record of 11-10. After starting the year 0-7, they won 11 of their next 13 games to win their first ever Northeast Conference Championship.
