Pioneer Rally Falls Short in 5-3 Loss to New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. - University of New Hampshire seniors Kaitlyn Skelley and Katie White each recorded two goals and an assist to propel the Wilcats to a 5-3 win over Sacred Heart in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-2 to start the season while UNH is now 1-1.

The Wildcats struck first off the stick of White who converted the feed of Skelley into an early 1-0 UNH lead. The Pioneers struck back, scoring on a corner and an unassisted goal to take a 2-1 lead at the 31:30 mark.

Junior Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) buried a shot from the top of the circle off a one-two feed from junior Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT) and senior Nicole Falco (Ocean, NJ). McLane gave SHU their only lead hitting on a backhand shot from the top left circle.

The Pioneer lead would last just 77 seconds as UNH's Sarah Craigue tied the score at 32:47, off a pass from White from the middle of the circle. Craigue took the pass and jammed the ball into the open cage at the left post.

UNH was awarded an untimed penalty corner at the end of the first half, and the 'Cats capitalized to take a 3-2 halftime lead. The ball was stopped at the top of the circle for Emily Colton, who pushed the ball to the left wing for Skelley and her low shot found the back of the cage.

Sacred Heart knotted the game back up at 3-3 at the 40:37 makr as freshman Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) scored down low off a rebound. Eye scored for the second time in as many games to go with an assist to start the year.

White gave New Hampshire its third lead of the game, 4-3, at 47:02 when she gathered a midfield pass from Brittany Jacobs at the top-left of the circle and backhanded a shot into the cage. Skelley extended UNH's advantage to 5-3 with 10:05 remaining when she converted a centering pass from MacKenzie Stuart into a goal.

SHU pressed to trim the deficit and were denied on one shot on a defensive save by Brooke Bercari at the right post. UNH goalkeeper Margaux Shute, who finished with eight saves, preserved the Wildcats' two-goal advantage the rest of the way. Pioneer goalie Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH) was credited with six saves.

The Pioneers are back in action on Friday, September 2nd when they take on Yale University on the road starting at 7 pm.
