Pioneers Shutout St. Francis in NEC Opener

Loretto, Pa - Sacred Heart used six first-half goals as a springboard to a 7-0 win over St. Francis in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams at Stokes Athletics Field on Sunday.

Saint Francis (0-5, 0-1 NEC) was outshot, 26-6, and the Pioneers held a 13-2 edge in penalty corners.

Pioneers junior Becky Ford (Salem, N.H.) scored three goals in the first half as SHU improved to 2-7 on the season. Ford opened the scoring when she poked in a loose ball in front of the net just 57 seconds into the match. Senior Nicole Falco (Ocean, N.J.) was credited with one of her three assists on the play.

Junior Sarah Yeaton (Hampton, N.H.) beat SFU freshman goalkeeper Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich.) with a blast from the top of the penalty circle with 15:10 remaining in the first half. Yeaton was set up on a penalty corner by Falco and junior Jenna McLane (Stowe, Vt.). Ford then scored back-to-back unassisted goals within 1:30 of each other to open up a 4-0 lead. Freshman Becky Dyson (Camp Hill, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season with 1:51 left in the first half on an assist from junior Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Carney then closed the first-half scoring with a goal just 51 seconds later on assists from Falco and sophomore Leah Stoehr (Hummelstown, Pa.).

Sophomore Jenn Howley (North Salem, N.Y.) made the score 7-0 on an assist from McLane in the 69th minute.

Reifsteck made three first-half saves for the Red Flash, while junior Kristen Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J.) made six stops in 35 minutes of action in the second half. SHU (2-7, 1-0 NEC) junior Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, Pa.) combined to make two saves in the shutout victory.

The Pioneers are off until Saturday when they will host Lehigh in their first game of the season at Campus Field. Game time is 1:00 pm.
