
Pioneer Cruise Past Rhode Island, 9-0

Milford, CT - Junior Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) tallied two goals and an assist, and freshman Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) added one goal and three assists as the Pioneers beat Rhode Island 9-0 in women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Panella got the Pioneers started 5:17 into the game. After Rams goaltender Lynn Pecci made a save on Arnone's initial shot, Panella was in front to pop home the rebound and tally the power play goal.
The Pioneers went up 2-0 with a power play goal by Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) with 3:47 to go in the opening period. McLaughlin set up next to the post, took a feed from Arnone and jammed the puck past Ram goaltender Lynn Pecci for the goal.
Junior Devon Gaslin (Augusta, ME) topped off a three goal first for the Pioneers with a goal with 2:18 left in the period. Gaslin picked up a loose puck at center ice, skated over the blue line and flipped a shot under Pecci's arm to put Sacred Heart up 3-0.
Senior Sarah Turbert (Norwalk, CT) put the Pioneers up 4-0 12:20 into the second period. After Turbert won a face off back to freshman Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA), Dziama sent Turbert up the ice with a head long pass. Turbert moved into the Rhode Island zone and blasted a shot into the back of the net.
With 4:05 left in the middle stanza freshman Allie Gillman (Montreal, QC) scored the Pioneers fifth goal of the afternoon. Gillman picked up a rebound off a shot by sophomore Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA) and flipped it into the back of the Ram net.
The Pioneers kept the offensive pressure on in the final period, scoring four more goals. Arnone notched her goal on the afternoon 1:30 into the period, and 59 seconds later, Hickman scored the first of her two goals in the final stanza.
Panella scored her second goal of the day with 3:15 left in the game. After Arnone's initial shot was stopped by Pecci, Panella was in front to punch in the loose puck rebound.
Hickman completed the Pioneer scoring for the day with1:21 to go. With the Pioneers on the power play, Hickman carried the puck behind the Rhode Island net and flipped it into the back of the goal on the wraparound.
Sacred Heart dominated the game offensively, out shooting Rhode Island 55-18. Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) stopped all 15 shots she faced before being lifted in the third period.
The Pioneers and Rams will face-off Sunday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
